The Francophonie Summit

Cambodia is honored to host the 20th Francophonie Summit for the first time in its history. The Summit will be held on November 15 and 16, 2026, in Phnom Penh. The Cambodian capital is distinguished by its remarkable combination of a history marked by resilience, an architectural heritage blending colonial and Khmer influences, and an exceptional geographical location at the confluence of three rivers. This major international event is a significant milestone for the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) and for the promotion of the Francophonie in Asia. The Summit, the supreme decision-making body of the Francophonie, brings together, every two years, the Heads of State and Government of the 90 member states and governments to discuss issues of political, economic, cultural, and educational cooperation, as well as the shared values that underpin the Francophone community.

This edition is also of particular importance, as it takes place during an election year for the Francophonie, marked by the election of its Secretary General. The decisions made in Phnom Penh will thus help define the Organization’s strategic directions for the years to come.

A Powerful Symbol of Cambodia’s Commitment

A full member of the Francophonie since 1993, Cambodia reaffirms, through hosting this Summit, its enduring commitment to Francophone ideals. This designation is in keeping with the legacy of King-Father Norodom Sihanouk, a founding figure of the Francophonie. It demonstrates the Kingdom’s desire to play an active role in multilateral cooperation.

Following the 19th Summit, held in France in 2024, the 2026 edition will be the second Francophonie Summit organized in Asia, after the one in Hanoi in 1997.

National and International Mobilization

The Cambodian authorities have undertaken structured preparations through the establishment of a National Organizing Committee, supported by a Secretariat and six subcommittees, in close coordination with the OIF (International Organization of La Francophonie). Several aspects are central to the organization: diplomatic protocol, security, communication, logistics, and the preparation of parallel events with an economic, cultural, and educational focus.

Alongside the Summit, a rich and diverse program will celebrate La Francophonie through:

  • the Francophonie Village, showcasing the diversity of Francophone culture and art;
  • economic and digital initiatives, particularly around FrancoTech; and
  • actions aimed at strengthening the teaching, learning, and dissemination of the French language.

A Strategic Opportunity for Francophone Economic Actors

Beyond its political significance, the Francophonie Summit provides a prime platform for visibility, dialogue, and networking for economic, institutional, and consular actors within the Francophone world. It fosters exchanges, strengthens South–South and North–South cooperation, and promotes Francophone territories, expertise, and economic initiatives.

In line with the Summit’s theme, “Reinvest in Peace for Shared Prosperity and Sustainable Stability,” this international gathering will highlight the essential role of Francophone cooperation in building a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous future.
